What Is Vermicompost?

April 2, 2026

Vermicompost is a specialty compost made with the help of worms.

Yes — worms!  Not just any worm – we use the mighty Red Wiggler or Eisenia fetida.

There are over 9,000 species of worms, and generally 7 of those species are considered composting worms!  These aren’t normal worms that you find in your garden!

Composting worms eat leftover organic stuff like food scraps and plant material, and then they transform it into a great soil amendment to give your plants a boost of organic matter! That finished product is called vermicompost. You can think of vermicompost like super food for soil. Providing an environment for microorganisms and plants to thrive!  Vermicompost helps create a soil environment that’s alive, called Living Soil!

Why Is Vermicompost Good? Plants need healthy soil to grow big and strong.

Vermicompost helps by:

  • Improving soil structure for better root environment
  • Helping the soil absorb and retain water
  • Aiding in the proliferation of microorganisms
  • Supplies organic matter – the stuff that plants and microbes feed on!

That means flowers, vegetables, and other plants can grow better when vermicompost is mixed into the soil of your garden!

Why Do Worms Matter?

Composting worms are masters at consuming decaying organic matter and producing worm castings – or Vermicompost – through their digestive system and plants love it!

It’s kind of like they are making a natural plant booster.

Where Can You Use It?

Vermicompost is versatile!  Plants love it, and it’s great for:

  • Seedlings
  • New Plantings
  • Raised Beds
  • Houseplants
  • Gardens
  • Vegetables
  • Flowers

How to use Vermicompost:

It’s easy to apply!  For the most part, add a little bit to the soil, around the base of the plant and water in!  Apply every few weeks as needed.

  • For Established Plants – Top dress around the plant, ¼ to ½ inches deep and water.
  • New Plantings – Add between ½ – 1 cup of Vermicompost into the hole, then top dress as directed.
  • New garden beds – Mix in product at up-to 20% volume.

Why should I use Vermicompost?

Vermicompost is made by worms, and worms help turn old organic material into something plants can use and thrive on. That’s why vermicompost is such a great choice when you want healthier soil and happier plants.
