Measuring for mulch doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you know a few basics, you can order with confidence and avoid buying too much—or not enough.
To measure for mulch, you’ll need three dimensions:
For most mulch applications, 3–4 inches of depth is ideal. This depth helps suppress weeds, retain moisture, and gives beds a clean, finished look without smothering plants.
Start by measuring the length and width of your landscape bed in feet. If your bed has straight edges, this part is easy. For curved or irregular-shaped beds, a simple trick is to lay a garden hose along the edge of the bed, following the curves. Once the shape is outlined, straighten the hose and measure its total length. This gives you a much more accurate measurement than guessing.
Once you have your measurements, let the math do the work. Use our online material calculator to determine how much mulch you’ll need for your project.
