One of the most common questions we hear is: “How much material can I haul in my truck?”
The answer isn’t always straightforward, because hauling limits depend on weight, not just how full your truck looks.
Your vehicle’s payload capacity is the maximum weight it can safely carry. This includes, but is not limited to, the material you’re hauling, passengers and tools and gear, etc.
Even if there’s room left in the bed, exceeding payload capacity can damage your vehicle and create unsafe driving conditions.
Not all landscape materials weigh the same.
Some materials are light but take up more volume: Mulch & Compost
Others are very heavy, even in small amounts: Gravel, Stone, Sand, and Topsoil.
That means you might fill the bed with mulch and still be within your payload limit—but reach your weight limit long before the bed looks full when hauling stone.
It’s easy to assume that if material fits in the truck bed, it’s fine to haul. The weight, however, can add up quickly especially with certain products. Overloading can affect braking, steering, suspension, tires, and most importantly it’s unsafe.
That’s why our team often asks what you’re hauling and what you’re driving before recommending quantities.
When in Doubt, Go Smaller—or Get Delivery!
If you’re unsure about your vehicle’s payload capacity, it’s always better to haul a smaller amount,
make multiple trips or even consider having the material delivered.
Delivery takes the guesswork out of the process and ensures materials arrive safely and ready for your project.
