Help! I Need Material for My Driveway — What’s the Best Choice?

Choosing the right material for a driveway can feel overwhelming. There are a lot of options out there, but the key is understanding what actually makes a good driveway material.

In general, angular stone works best for driveways. Angular materials have sharp edges that lock together when compacted, creating a stable surface that holds up under vehicle traffic. This is what helps prevent ruts, shifting, and constant maintenance.

You’ll also hear materials described as “clear” or “with fines.”

• Clear stone is made up of one stone size with little to no smaller material mixed in.
• Stone with fines includes a blend of larger stones and much smaller particles. The fines help fill in the gaps, allowing the material to compact tightly and form a solid base—ideal for driveways.

On the other hand, round stones (like pea stone) are not compactable. Because the stones are smooth and rounded, they tend to move and shift under vehicle tires, making them a poor choice for driveways.

Sand and soils also aren’t recommended. While they may seem easy to work with, they don’t have the compatibility or the structure to support the weight of a vehicle.
