How Much Is a Yard of Mulch (Really)?

February 23, 2026

If you’ve ever ordered mulch and wondered, “What does a yard actually look like?”—you’re not alone. A cubic yard can be hard to picture until you see it in real life.

One cubic yard of mulch equals 27 cubic feet.
An easy way to visualize that is a 3′ x 3′ x 3′ cube. Stack it up, and that’s one yard.

Another way to picture it:
A yard of mulch takes up roughly the space of an average car parking spot when it’s piled before spreading. Once it’s on the ground, the coverage becomes clearer.

When spread 3 inches deep, one yard of mulch will cover about a 10′ x 10′ area. That depth is ideal for most landscape beds—it looks good and helps with moisture retention and weed suppression.

Prefer bagged mulch instead of bulk? Here’s the breakdown:
With Hammond Farms bagged mulch (2 cubic foot bags), it takes about 13.5 bags to equal one cubic yard.

Whether you’re refreshing a small bed or tackling a full weekend project, knowing how much mulch you need helps you plan better and avoid extra trips.
